![]() If this demo is any indicator, I think they might just nail it. My hope is that Nightdive’s remake continues to capture the authentic experience of the original, so that gamers everywhere can come to know what it is to fear SHODAN. ![]() So far, Nightdive’s demo feels like System Shock, now with more intuitive movement, facilitated HUD navigation, and updated graphics, which is exactly what I think fans of the original, myself included, have been wanting. Remaking a game as unusual and distinctive as System Shock is obviously difficult even its own sequel, System Shock 2, made a lot of changes to the System Shock formula that shifted the core experience of the game towards something more like Deus Ex. Lastly, I was really excited to check out Nightdive’s interpretation of Cyberspace, but the first terminal I found didn’t seem to be operable in this demo. The gun came with one type of ammo, but I only ever picked up a different type that I couldn’t seem to swap out for. System Shock is the fully fledged remake of the ground breaking original from 1994, combining cult gameplay with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface and all-new sounds & music it even has the original voice actor of SHODAN, one of gaming’s most iconic villains. I also couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to switch my pistol’s ammo out. The demo doesn’t allow you to save, so after I died early on in my first run, I had to start from the beginning. At first, I had some camera wackiness as I passed through doorways or went from room to room, but the longer I played, the more unstable my camera movement became. It took me about an hour to complete the demo. The demo played like a slow, moody horror game, which is a pretty big departure from the relatively colorful, electronic soundtracked, fast-paced original. I wasn’t afraid of her because I knew her. The games are super old so im so excited for this remake - System Shock 2 is perhaps my favourite game of all time. Slowly, I regained my footing, and as I approached the end of the demo, I could feel my confidence coming back. I felt lost, scrambling for traction, all the while I knew SHODAN could see my every move, my every dead end. For a while I stood there, watching these tubes breathe in and out, and I felt even more insecure and vulnerable than I had in the original. Various tubes and panels almost seemed to be breathing, as if SHODAN herself was embodied in the station, and I was navigating her interior. System Shock was a hit, rightly led to a 1997 sequel, and earned the first game a place in the history books. The future (as interpreted by the past) is finally here.SHODAN’s presence felt somehow even more pervasive as I walked along corridor after corridor. The System Shock remake will hopefully cash in on the recent success of the Dead Space remake and possibly lead to a remake of the equally brilliant System Shock 2. It's a real treat, with the latest look at System Shock being the tip of the iceberg. As an added bonus, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is completely free during the event too. You can take a look at games like Rushaway and Spiritfall during the event, as well as System Shock. If you fancy getting involved with the indie-laden Steam Next Fest, then there's no better time, meaning you'll get some brilliant demos as you do. What Else Is Available During Steam Next Fest? All you have to do to bag the System Shock Remake demo is head to the store page of System Shock on Steam, and click download. The demo comes as a part of Steam Next Fest - a new event that lets Steam players take a peek at the future of gaming, as well as dishing out some existing titles for free. As an incentive to buy before release, Nightdive Studios is throwing in a free copy of its upcoming remaster, System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, to sweeten the deal. A remake has been in the works for years but slipped into development hell as the rights have been carved up by various parties. With no restrictions, the demo allows you to play through the entire opening of the iconic game while facing down SHODAN and her goons. System Shock is one step closer to being back in our lives, as a brand-new demo for the remake has finally been unveiled.
